Bartlett spreads across three counties — Cook, DuPage and Kane — on the western edge of the metropolitan area, where subdivisions give way to open land and forest preserve. It grew fast and recently, so the street layout is a series of self-contained loops and cul-de-sacs rather than a grid. A cul-de-sac has one way in and one way out, which is the defining constraint on any surveillance here.
Why we are called to Bartlett
About Bartlett
The village exists because Luther Bartlett, who farmed here, donated land for a station when a railroad was pushed west from Chicago in 1873. A settlement formed around the depot and incorporated in 1891, taking his name. It stayed a small farming village for most of the twentieth century; the great majority of its housing was built after 1970, which is why its street pattern is so different from the older towns nearby.
We have worked across Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties since 1991. Knowing a community — how it was laid out, how it grew, how people actually move through it — is part of how an investigation gets done properly here.
