St. Charles sits on both banks of the Fox River with a historic downtown, a riverwalk and an older residential core, and substantial properties on acreage east and west of it. The river is a practical constraint worth planning around: crossings are limited, so a subject’s route is more predictable than in a grid town — but a lost contact can take a long time to recover. The horse property and large lots on the outskirts need the same method as any other rural work.
Why we are called to St. Charles
About St. Charles
Settled in 1834 at a ford on the Fox River and known first as Charleston, the town adopted the name St. Charles in 1839 after a conflict over postal naming, and incorporated as a city in 1874. The river powered the mills that drove its early economy, with limestone and dairy following. Much of the civic architecture in the centre dates from a period of public building in the 1920s and 1930s.
We have worked across Kane County since 1991. Knowing a community — how it was laid out, how it grew, how people actually move through it — is part of how an investigation gets done properly here.
