Lemont sits in the river and canal valley where three counties meet — Cook, DuPage and Will — with a historic limestone downtown on the valley floor and newer residential development on the bluffs above. The topography is genuinely unusual for the region: steep grades, limited crossings and a clear separation between the old village below and the new subdivisions above.
Why we are called to Lemont
About Lemont
Lemont was made by the canal. When the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848, quarries along the valley began cutting the local limestone — sold as Athens marble and used in buildings across Chicago, including the Water Tower that survived the fire. Irish and later Eastern European quarry workers settled the town, which incorporated in 1873, and the stone buildings of its downtown still stand on the valley floor.
We have worked across Cook, DuPage and Will Counties since 1991. Knowing a community — how it was laid out, how it grew, how people actually move through it — is part of how an investigation gets done properly here.
