About Downers Grove
A little history of Downers Grove.
Pierce Downer, a settler from New York, claimed land here in 1832 and the settlement took his name. Several early residents were active in the anti-slavery movement, and the village's role on the Underground Railroad is part of its recorded history. The arrival of the railroad in the 1860s set its shape, and it now has three separate stations on the same line — unusual, and a legacy of the separate settlements that grew along the tracks.
