About Libertyville
A little history of Libertyville.
Settled in the 1830s around a sawmill on the Des Plaines River and known first as Independence Grove, the village took the name Libertyville and incorporated in 1882. It briefly held county business in the early 1840s before that moved to Waukegan. Adlai Stevenson II farmed and lived here for much of his political life, and a good deal of the surrounding farmland is now held as forest preserve.
