About Summit
A little history of Summit.
The name is literal: the village sits on the summit of the low divide between the Great Lakes and Mississippi watersheds, the height of land that made the Chicago Portage necessary. The canal cut through that divide in the nineteenth century, and heavy industry followed the canal and the railroads. The village incorporated in 1890 and has been an industrial community ever since.
We have worked across Cook County since 1991. Knowing a community — how it was laid out, how it grew, how people actually move through it — is part of how an investigation gets done properly here.
