About Batavia
A little history of Batavia.
Settled in 1833 on the Fox River, Batavia used its water power for milling and then for manufacturing windmills, becoming one of the largest producers in the country and earning the name Windmill City. Limestone quarried locally built much of the older town, and many of those solid stone industrial buildings still stand along the river, converted now to offices and apartments.
