Palatine is mostly residential, with a compact downtown around the Union Pacific Northwest Metra line and an unusually large number of townhouse and condominium developments. Shared walls, shared parking decks and shared management companies change what is possible: a vehicle sitting in a private lot is conspicuous, and a target's movements are often better documented at the station platform than at the front door.
Why we are called to Palatine
About Palatine
Settlers arrived in the 1830s and 1840s, and the name is generally credited to an early resident who had come from Palatine, New York. The railroad reached the settlement in 1854 and the village incorporated in 1866, growing as a farm-market and dairy centre serving Chicago. Its character stayed small-town until the post-war suburban expansion, and the arrival of a community college in the 1960s added a substantial student and staff population that it retains today.
We have worked across Cook County since 1991. Knowing a community — how it was laid out, how it grew, how people actually move through it — is part of how an investigation gets done properly here.
